RESEARCH PROJECTS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES

  • Projects I: Real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS)
     I participated in the
    SNU – U of T collaboration project: ‘Hybrid simulation of a suspended bridge deck subjected to wind load’. For this project, I visited the University of Toronto during 2018.01-2019.02. I worked with the University of Toronto group (Prof. Oh-Sung Kwon and Moniruzzaman Moni).
    • The scope of the experiment and the capacity estimation of the RTHS system was in charge of Seoul National University. Based on the wind tunnel experiment experience, I designed the real-time hybrid simulation system for the bridge deck. The motor control and operation program was carried out with the help of the Prof. Kwon.
    • With 4 linear motors and load cells, RTHS system simulate the vertical/torsional motion. RTHS system was validated with the free-/forced vibration.
    • I graduated with this topic: ‘Real-time Hybrid Simulation System for the Aeroelastic Phenomena of the Bridge Deck’. 3 international conference papers
  • Projects II: Wind resistance design of cable-supported bridge during the construction stage
     I participated in many projects for wind resistance design/assessment of the construction of long-span bridges via wind tunnel test.
    • Yeong gwang cable-stayed bridge with POSCO/DM engineering (2011-2012): 2-dimensional section model wind tunnel test for wind resistance design and extraction of the aero-static and dynamic coefficients.
    • Jido-Imja cable-stayed bridge with POSCO (2013-2014): 2-dimensional section model/ 3-dimensional full scale wind tunnel test for wind resistance design. I proposed the modified deck shape attached extended lower plate and flap for mitigating the torsional VIV and flutter phenomena through free-vibration tests and PIV tests.
    • Sheik Jaber Al-Almad Al-Sabah Causeway Project with Hyndai E&C (2013-2014): 2-dimensional section model/ free standing pylon wind tunnel test for wind resistance design. I mitigated the vertical VIV by adjusting the distance between the inspection rails.
    • Taeha-Hwangtogumi pedestrian bridge (2017): 2-dimensional section model wind tunnel test for extraction of the aero-static and dynamic coefficients.
  • Projects III: A deeper understanding of vibration caused by wind
    • Development of the force-controlled steady-state excitation apparatus (funded by the Super Long Span Bridge R&D project, 2012-2015): This apparatus was developed to extract flutter derivatives in steady-state conditions. This condition further satisfies the conditions assumed by Scanlan(1971). 1 patent and 2 international conference papers
    • Aeroelastic Characteristics and Wind Pressure Distribution of Twin Deck Sections with CFD simulation and Wind-Tunnel Test with COWI A/S (2015-2016): Measurement of wind distribution and aero-elastic parameters according to gap distance for twin-deck bridge
    • Cause investigation of the vortex-induced vibration(VIV) in the Yi-Sun-Shin suspension bridge (2015): A series of wind tunnel tests revealed the main cause of the VIV was temporary screens applied over the guardrails to shield the curing surface during replacement of epoxy-coated pavement. The damping ratio of the triggered mode for VIV was the lowest among the investigated modes and estimated to be the level of the design-damping ratio. 2 SCI (E) papers and 4 international conference papers
    • IABSE WG10(Super-Long Span Bridge Aerodynamics) member (2016-2017): The objective of this working group is as following: 1) Analysis of the different methods developed by researchers and designers involved in bridge design, 2) Definition of guidelines identifying a procedure to obtain the data necessary for the computation. Among the results of the various research groups, SNU group showed a good analysis result with Politec di Milano, Europe's leading wind engineering research team responsible for the design of wind resistance of Messina Bridge.
